The PCG have confirmed that they will work with the Government in their new IR35 forum, which has been established to scrutinise HMRC’s future work with IR35 legislation. The group, who represent the 1.4m freelancers and contractors in the UK, were heavily involved before the budget, in their work with the Office for Tax Simplification, and have since continued to provide analysis and reaction.
Following the budget announcement PCG Chairman Chris Bryce stated that they would work with the government and be part of this IR35 forum. Their position has now been confirmed after a meeting with senior officials from HMRC, HM Treasury and the OTS. Speaking about this decision, PCG Managing Director John Brazier said;
“It is vital that freelancers are properly represented at this juncture. We have been assured that far from being a ‘talking shop’ the new Forum will be a positive force for change. PCG has already put forward initial thoughts on how the Forum should work to revamp IR35. We will continue to develop these ideas in conjunction with our membership.”
“The acknowledgement from all sides at the OTS conference that tax collection needs to be better administered underlines that there is a genuine climate for change. As the UK’s largest association representing freelancers and contractors it is our responsibility to do everything in our power to deliver that change and to ensure the best business environment for freelancers. This remains our core objective.”
This is a positive move for contractors, with the PCG very clear on their aim to fully represent and support the workforce. There was some disappointment following the budget that IR35 was retained, but at a time when employment laws and red tape surround workers it is important for freelancers and contractors to be properly represented.
