Oil and Gas Industry Did Not Bypass The Recession

There were claims that the oil and gas industry would be unaffected by the recession and global economic crisis but those working in the industry have disagreed. They say in the past 18th months, the sector has most certainly been affected.

There has been a decrease in the volume of design work, leading to fewer opportunities for contractors specialising in conceptual / FEED engineering.  A need for cheap labour saw design work being outsourced to countries such as India to save on labour costs.

Another trend observed by oil and gas recruiters is the preference for permanent workers rather than contractors as it allows for greater control on restricted budgets.

Optimism within the industry is increasing though, but oil and gas recruitment expert, Matthew Halle believes contractors will still struggle to secure contracts as he believes permanent roles will continue to be the preferred choice in the second half of 2010.
