Most Expensive UK and Worldwide Cities Revealed

A Cost Of Living Survey conducted by Mercers has revealed the most expensive cities to live in, both in the UK and worldwide for expatriates.

The survey covers 214 cities across the world and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location. These include housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. New York is used as the base city for the index and all cities are compared against New York.

Contractors, looking to source contracts in the UK or abroad may find this information helpful if they are choosing to relocate to undertake the role. For a contractor to relocate for even a short amount of time, this survey may be valuable as it gives them an idea of how much your living costs will be whilst you are working there.

Luanda in Angola came out first in the survey with Tokyo is in second position and Ndjamena in Chad in third place. From the survey, London (rank 17) is the UK’s most expensive city, followed by Aberdeen (149), Glasgow (155), and Birmingham (158). Belfast (182) is ranked as the UK’s least expensive city.

Contractor hotspots were also measured such as Milan (15), Dublin (44), Frankfurt (50) Abu Dhabi (51), Brussels (53), Dubai (55), Lagos (62), Beirut (80) and Mumbai (89). The full list can be found here.
