Opportunities For IT Contractors In The Banking Sector

Tech research firm Gartner recently released figures which suggested that IT spend would increase this year, with 43% of the senior decision makers they spoke to saying that their IT spend would rise. This signals opportunities for contractors looking for work in the IT sector.

Banking, software and telecoms look like being hot sectors for the year ahead for IT contractors, the largest opportunity being in the banking sector. The banks may have been first hit by the recession but they are also believed to be the first to recover. This is due to the legalities of rehiring permanent staff after mass redundancies and they will instead look to contractors to fulfil these roles.

Contract Eye reported this week that 48% of the IT Job Board survey respondents highlighted that banking would be the principal sector, in spite of the problems it has faced in 2009. 42% believed it would be software and IT services, and 41% opted for telecoms.

Peter Healey, sales director at The IT Job Board, said: “I believe that next year the finance sector will really pick up. Banking was the first to be hit during the recession, but it will also be the first to recover, and it will offer a lot of opportunity in terms of IT recruitment.” This comment further backs up the findings from Gartner with regards to opportunities for IT contractors.
