HMRC State New Phishing Email Is Circulating

HM Revenue and Customs have been informed there is a new phishing email circulating, this time relating to National Insurance contributions.

HMRC have released a statement saying;

‘An email is in circulation entitled National Insurance Contributions, stating that a payment has not been made. The email contains a link to a fraudulent website that requests the disclosure of payment/personal details. The email is not from HMRC.

Do not visit the website contained within the email or disclose any personal or payment information.’

This new email adds to phising emails relating to a  Tax Rebate and Approval of funds that have been circulating for a number of months. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) would not inform customers of a tax rebate via email, or invite them to complete an online form to receive a rebate of tax.

Email addresses used to distribute the tax rebate emails include:

  • tax-inform@hmrc-information.co.uk
  • tax-individuals@hm-treasury.co.uk
  • online@hmrc.online-advantage.co.uk
  • office.tax@hmrc.taxreturn.co.uk
  • customers@hmrc.gov.uk

  • refunds@hmrc.gov.uk
  • taxcredits@hmrc.co.uk
  • service@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
  • officer.robinson@hmrc.co.uk

HMRC does not send out emails using these email addresses.

If you receive an email requesting such information, please forward it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete it.

    Hi

Unfortunately, I filled in this form (as I was paying 40% tax and am now unemployed) as I anticipate I will receive a rebate. I tried to send the email i received to the email address above, however the fliter blocks it as it is obviously a scam.

Please advise if I need to take any other precautions due to filling in the tax rebate form online.

    Thanks

    Hi Karen,

It is very important you contact HMRC or your local tax office regarding this matter.

HMRC would never request such detailed information over an email. I have sent a more detailed email to your email address.

You can find further information regarding online security issues by visiting the HMRC website. Please find the link attached, http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/index.htm

We have just received this scam email. However someone else in the company received it and thought it was legititate. Luckily they questioned it before giving our bank details.

Always check with hmrc with any email.
